Report from the Whitby Congress 2019
Noel Boustred, of Wallsend, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, usually runs three congresses a year in Yorkshire, in Harrogate, Halifax and Whitby, all usually modest in terms of number of entries, but usually well-supported by a band of “regulars”. Somewhat unexpectedly, his 2017 Calderdale Congress won the ECF’s Congress of the Year award.
The 2019 Whitby Congress was again held at Whitby Conservative Club, Upgang Lane, Whitby, from 28th to 30th June, following its usual “star’s barred” format: Major section, for players graded 181 or under, and Minor section for players graded 146 or under.
Winner of the Major section of 14 players was John Hall of Bolton with 4½ out of 5, followed by four players on 3 out of 5. Winner of the Minor section of 15 players was an unfamiliar player, Barry Robinson, with 4½ out of 5, followed in second place by 13-year-old Max Parkhouse of Harrogate, with 3½ out of 5.
Thanks to Steve Mann and Noel Boustred for their contribution to the website.
